DRUG RECALLS

What are drug recalls?

Drug makers don't have their art down to an exact science. There is extensive research that goes into creating and manufacturing drugs. That doesn't mean that at the end of the process when they're released to the public that something isn't going to go wrong. There are times when all the research in the world won't keep a "bad" drug from being released to the public. This happens a lot in the drug industry. They create drugs to help people, release it, and then find out that affects some people badly. When it does, they issue a recall on the drug. This means it's pulled from shelves for good or for further research so that they can make sure it's safe for people to continue taking it.

What happens from there?

Drugs can be pulled permanently or temporarily. When they're pulled permanently, they're never stocked on shelves again. They present a public health risk that can't be overcome by further research. In other cases a drug will be temporarily moved from shelves and then put in labs for further testing to see what can be done to make it safer for customers. Drug safety is an extremely important part of the process because unless a drug is safe for consumption, any health benefits it has isn't going to mean much. Thanks to the FDA and other organizations that double check on drug safety, it's possible for so many people to skip over the horrible health effects of drugs that aren't safe.

Side effects are normal

There's a difference between side effects and a health risk. Most drugs are associated with a list of side effects that can cause discomfort to patients at first but might not be unsafe for them to take. Doctors monitor these.
